Green School
Green Schools Flag

The Green Schools Programme is under way in Scoil Dara. We are currently working on our action plan as we set about achieving our first Green Flag for waste and litter. We have separate waste bins, we recycle paper and cardboard and we also have a policy of turning off all electrical appliances at the end of the school day. We have identified the areas where we can improve and there will be a whole school initiative in place in the New Year.

Students from all year groups are welcome to attend the meetings that are held weekly. Students take on different responsibilities. Some take on contacting the battery recycling company, others for the cleaning of different areas of the school, some bring intercom announcements to Mr.Gannon and others are constantly working on building up awareness of what we are about as a group.

To date we have recycled batteries, ran a poster and slogan campaign, created a Green Schools notice board, we are supporting the collection of lids to assist the purchase of a wheelchair and we have also had a talk with the environmental officer Dara Wyer. For Christmas the committee members made a Christmas tree and decorations out of recycled materials.

In 2013 we expect to make great strides in our journey to achieving our first flag. We are planning a Green Day in the school, a mobile telephone recycling campaign, a tree planting ceremony and much more. This initiative is ongoing,. Ní neart go cur le chéile!
