LCVP Guest speaker
On Monday 23rd May, Niall Phelan from the Rye River Brewing Company kindly visited the fifth year LCVP students and spoke to them about his enterprise. It was a highly informative and enjoyable talk. Niall spoke of his own educational and business background. He offered help and advice to the students regarding setting up their own enterprises and encouraged them to learn from all experiences, both positive and negative. We are very appreciative and grateful to Niall and all at Rye River Brewing company for taking the time to visit us.
The Summer Awards 2016
The Summer Awards 2016 took place on Wednesday the 18th May. Congratulations to all recipients of Academic, Sporting and Special ( Dr Hickey, Ms Kirwin , Ms Nugent and Father PJ Byrne) awards.
The Mary Griffin Golf Tournament
The Mary Griffin Golf Tournament took place on Wednesday 25th May. This is an annual golf outing where students compete against teachers (both past and present) for the coveted Claret Jug on display in the school trophy cabinet. Since the competition's inception in 2011 the students have dominated the event, winning four titles. Well done to all participants. We congratulate our students on their victory!
LCVP: Enterprise Education
5th Year LCVP students, as part of Enterprise Education attended a site visit at Musgraves Kilcock. They were given a very interesting and informative talk by Ms. Dawn Nugent who outlined among other things, the history of Musgraves in Kilcock, its role within the Musgraves organisation, recruitment, employment and training. She lead and facilitated a tour of the warehouse and the different departments including transport where Mr Frank Murphy described to the students how the deliveries were arranged & the health and safety arrangements for drivers. The students were then given the opportunity to sit in an articulated truck. The visit concluded with lunch in the boardroom. We are very grateful to Dawn, Frank & Musgraves for such an informative, educational and enjoyable experience.
Scoil Dara's First Green Flag
Scoil Dara received confirmation today from An Taisce regarding the awarding of our first Green Flag for Litter and Waste. The school community is delighted by this achievement and look forward to a flag raising ceremony in May. The flag will be awarded to the school at a ceremony in The Helix Theatre on May 25th next. Congratulations to the Green schools committee, environmental Prefects and staff involved in all the stages of the process. Scoil Dara abú!
The Combined Schools Careers Night
The Combined Schools Careers Night on Thursday April 28th was a huge success with over eight hundred students attending presentations by representatives from twenty six career sectors. It is hoped that this will once again become an annual event in Scoil Dara's calendar. Thanks to Maynooth University for the use of The John Hume Building to facilitate the event.
Congratulations to the school’s senior football team who won the Kildare/Laois/Offaly league final on Friday, April 8th last in St Conleth's park, Newbridge. The final score was Scoil Dara 2-14, Ardscoil Rathangan 4-6.
LCVP Guest speaker
Former Scoil Dara Head Boy, Ose Oifoh, visited the school on Thursday 7th April last to present to 5th year LCVP students. He spoke to the students on the topic of the transition from school to college and the world of work. Ose's talk was exceptionally well received by all who attended.
Visit to The National Concert Hall
On March 6th & 7th, Scoil Dara music students attended concerts in The National Concert Hall. Third year music students also received a very informative tour of the concert hall to learn about the past history of the famous building.
Farm Walk and Talk" day at Teagasc
On Thursday, March 10th , Agricultural Science students from Scoil Dara attended a " Farm Walk and Talk" day at Teagasc, Dunsaney Co Meath. Through curriculum-linked tours, students had the opportunity for hands-on learning on a variety of elements of farming life and experienced the practicalities of the subject area.
Scoil Dara's New Proclamation for 1916
Ms Dorian and Transition Year students recently held a competition for students to compose a new proclamation for 2016. Congratulations to the winner Wura Biala (1st year student) whose winning submission was entitled: ‘Scoil Dara: Dreams for the future’
'Scoil Dara in 1916' 'Make History'
On Tuesday the 15th of March Scoil Dara will celebrate Proclamation Day in style. All staff and students are encouraged to dress in the fashions of 1916.There will be prizes for the most authentic costume on the day. Students will also take part in a re-enactment of the 1916 rising. There will be a reading of the proclamation followed by the raising of the Irish flag.
TY: YSI Guest Speaker
On Monday, March 7th, Gregory Merrin of the Peter Mc Verry Trust spoke to Transition-Year students on homelessness in Ireland. His visit was arranged by the TY students as part of their YSI project.
Griffith College Enterprise Final
Scoil Dara's ‘Fidget Widget’ enterprise group , with members Aoibhinn Wrenn , Aine Roberts and Gearoid Gibbons, represented the school in the Griffith College Enterprise final competition on Tuesday 8th March.
They were one of 12 groups selected from 85 entrants nationwide.
Scoil Dara's Bank of Ireland Branch
Scoil Dara's Bank of Ireland branch was launched by Transition Year Business students on March 10th last. It will facilitate TY students working in a variety of roles from Bank Manager to Customer Service Official as part of an effective team. The School Bank also provides the opportunity for students to open a bank account and save on a regular basis. The Student School Bank team will be supported by experienced Bank of Ireland staff members from the local Enfield branch to ensure the smooth operation of the School Bank
Seachtain na Gaeilge
To celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge, Transition Year and Music students will take part in a Ceili on Wednesday the 16th of March.
Transition Year students from 4B and 4C will also organise a Tráth na gCeist Boird (Table Quiz) for all First-Year students on Monday the 14th of March.
Kildare Enterprise Regional Finals
Congratulations to Transition Year students from Sweet Temptations (Alex Mulligan, Niamh Langley and Conor Lane) who won a trophy and €100 euro bursary for the best display in the Kildare Enterprise Regional Finals on March the 3rd
Award of Excellence
Congratulations to Caoimhe Sheil and Emily Davies who each received an " Award of Excellence" on Feb 9th in Maynooth University for the results they obtained in their Junior Certificate Business Examination 2015.
Regional Final Winner: Credit Union Poster Art Competition 2016
Congratulations to Alannah Clinton (2nd year Art student) who has won 1st prize (14-17year age category) in the Regional final of the 'Happiness is...' Credit Union Poster Art Competition 2016. Her design now goes forward to the national finals of this competition.
FTA French film
TY students (4C) recently completed a short film for entry to the FTA French film competition. Well done to all involved for their engagement and hard work.
Study Skills Seminar
Study Skills is a new initiative in Scoil Dara set up to assist first year students with studying. It is run by teachers, free of charge, who will create a relaxed and informal atmosphere where students can explore new ways of studying. We will help students to identify their preferred method of study and introduce them to various study techniques (e.g. MindMaps, Flow Charts, Concise Note-taking, etc) which can be used in any subject.
The aim is that students will develop planning and organisational skills which will benefit them greatly not just in school, but also as adults. The emphasis is on removing the stress normally associated with study and creating happy, confident, independent learners who love learning!
The Study Skills group takes place every Tuesday, from 4pm – 5pm beginning Tuesday 19th January.
Visit by Deputy Bernard Durkin
To aid students’ understanding of democracy and the Irish government, Fine Gael Deputy Bernard Durkin recently visited Ms Cooke's 2E CSPE class and provided a most informative account of life as an Irish politician.

Scoil Dara's Autumn Awards ceremony took place on the 30th of November last.

The occasion featured special guest and former Scoil Dara student Christopher Morash who was recently awarded a studentship by the National University of Ireland to enable him to pursue a PhD abroad at either the University of Toronto in Canada or at the University of Cambridge in England. Sincere congratulation to Christopher.

Entrance Scholarship to Maynooth University.
Congratulations to our past pupils Ciara Byrne and Cathal Coffey who both received an Entrance Scholarship to Maynooth University. The scholarship is awarded to students who obtained between 525 and 545 points.
International and European Science Olympiad.
Congratulations to our students Daniel Devine and Caoimhe Sheil who have been invited to participate in the National Olympiad selection process to select an Irish Team in the International and European Science Olympiad.
The Language Club
The language club is for Scoil Dara students who are not native English speakers and want to practice/improve their English skills through games and speaking with others in a fun, informal setting.
This club will take place in G3 on Tuesdays at lunchtime from 13:20-13:40 pm.

The French Club
The French club will be a fun way for Scoil Dara students to learn a little more about the French culture through songs, games, movie clips, social media and much more. It will also give students a chance to share their knowledge of the French culture and practice their French language skills.

Past Student Off to Harvard on Scholarship
Congratulations and best wishes to 1997 Leaving Certificate student Fiona Smyth who is off to Havard University in USA on a post doctoral scholarship. Fiona qualified as an architect and obtained her PhD in 2012. Arising from her PhD dissertation Dr. Fiona was awarded the Newman Medal for Architectural Acoustics by the Acoutiscal Society of America - the first time this medal has been awarded to a student in an Irish university- and the Stanley Prize for Construction History (awarded by the UK Construction History Society). After the two years post doctoral in Harvard Dr. Fiona will have a third year in TCD Dublin. Fiona's sister Sinead obtained her PhD in psychology in 2005 and her brother Cathal obtained his PhD in 2015, both also past pupils of Scoil Dara.
Atlanta (US) Choir for Homeless People started by Past Pupil
RTE 1 Television news carried a news item on Sunday 5th April 15 outlining how Scoil Dara past pupil Donal Noonan (from Kilcock, 2001 Leaving Certificate student) has formed a choir in Atlanta for homeless persons. This choir has received widespread publicity across the USA and has now been replicated in a number of US cities. Congratulations Donal and best wishes with all your work.
86% Go to Third Level
A recent analysis of 2014 Leaving Certificate students in Ireland published in national newspapers shows that 86% of Scoil Dara's 2014 Leaving Certificate class have gone to third level education.

"Buy A Brick" - Request for Support
"Buy A Brick", the fundraising initiative to build new sports changing rooms, has been launched. The support of parents, past pupils and current pupils will be greatly appreciated in helping us reach our target of €100,000 before 31 Jan 2015. To date there are 265 bricks sold. Thanks.
